About the Film

Armand tells the endearing story that traces a quiet Michigan hero, Armand Merizon, who, with the undying support of his wife and family, prevailed to become one of this country’s greatest artists despite the poverty of the Great Depression, rejection from his community, financial destitution, pressure to mass produce his art, and the physical maladies of macular degeneration, cancer, and arthritis.

Carving his own path, Armand leaves us a legacy of beauty, integrity, and perseverance, values we need to be reminded of in our fast-paced world.

The film also features over a hundred of Armand’s works, providing the most extensive international Merizon gallery available anywhere. Armand’s story is told through personal interviews with Armand and dozens of others intertwined with old photographs, and video clips, 16mm film footage from Merizon family archives.

Armand reveals the depth, techniques and discipline behind outstanding works of art which reflect the political, social and environmental changes in American society during the past 60 years.

Armand’s life and art continue to be an inspiration to artists and non-artists alike. Armand paints every day despite his advanced age and his 20 year struggle with macular degeneration, cancer, and arthritis. His perseverance in spite of his pain and near blindness offers hope and encouragement to all.

Because Armand has spent his whole life creating art instead of promoting his art, he has remained virtually unknown, even in his own West Michigan community. Now viewers all over the world have the opportunity to be among the first to discover this master.

As international artist, Paul Collins said, “It’s about time somebody acknowledges this man’s genius and recognizes his contributions to this city, our country, and the world.”

Armand has profoundly affected our lives. You will leave this film inspired by his story and awe struck by his artwork.
